For one season in the mid-1990’s, the greatest basketball player ever played…baseball.

Michael Jordan, at the peak of his powers, retired and tried out baseball. Not good enough for the majors right away, he played for an obscure minor league team. The biggest star in sports was spending his weekends in exotic locales such as Albuquerque, NM; Toledo, OH; and Quad City, IA. Regardless of where his team was playing, he brought the media circus with him. Teammates who had never spoken to a reporter were now being interviewed by the New York Times. No matter where MJ went, media attention was sure to follow.

There is something other than media attention that follows in the wake of Jesus of Nazareth wherever He goes. See if you can catch it in John 11:25-26: “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.’”

Where Jesus is, there is life. It does not matter where you go – through suffering, obscurity, or even death – if you are in Christ, you have life. When you are connected to Jesus through faith, you are connected to life itself! This is why even when a believer dies, they remain alive and continue in the presence of Christ. For those in Him by faith, the sting of death is stolen away by the One who is life.

When Jesus – life Himself – died, He could not stay dead. Death could not hold Life in its grasp and was overpowered. The same becomes true for us when Jesus – the resurrection and the life – is our Lord and Savior. Wherever He goes – including our hearts – there goes life.
